San Pedro de Atacama Guide 2026: Itineraries, tours, and tips

San Pedro is the magnetic heart of the driest desert in the world. An adobe town where dirt streets contrast with luxury hotels, and where the night sky is so bright it seems unreal. It is the starting point for landscapes that look like they belong on another planet.

Crossing the Atacama Desert was one of the most intense experiences of our trip through Chile. San Pedro feels like a refuge in the middle of an immense void, where the landscape is the true protagonist. It is a destination that demands you pause to acclimate to the altitude, but rewards you with the most spectacular sunsets you will ever see in your life.

What to See and Do: Atacama Must-Sees

  • Moon Valley (Valle de la Luna) and Death Valley (Valle de la Muerte) – Located a few kilometers from town. Their salt and sand formations create a unique lunar landscape. Watching the sunset from the main dune is a mandatory ritual.
  • Tatio Geysers – You must leave at dawn (4:00 AM) to see the steam columns in their full glory at sunrise. It is located at 4,300 meters above sea level, so prepare for extreme cold.
  • Highland Lagoons (Miscanti and Miñiques) – Two deep blue lagoons surrounded by volcanoes. The landscape here is one of absolute peace.
  • Cejar and Piedra Lagoons – Famous for their high salinity, which allows you to float effortlessly, similar to the Dead Sea.
  • Astronomical Tour – Atacama has the clearest skies in the world. Do not miss the opportunity to observe galaxies and nebulae through professional telescopes.
  • Puritama Hot Springs – A series of natural warm water pools hidden in a canyon. The perfect place to rest after days of intense tours.

Where to Stay in San Pedro

  • Town Center (Caracoles Street): Ideal if you want to be close to tour agencies, restaurants, and the social atmosphere.
  • Ayllus (Surroundings): These are ancient agricultural settlements. Here you will find boutique hotels and quieter lodges, ideal for disconnecting and seeing the stars without light pollution.

What to Eat (Desert Flavors)

Local gastronomy incorporates unique ingredients adapted to the aridity:

  • Rica-Rica: A local aromatic herb used in ice creams, infusions, and the famous "Rica-Rica Sour."
  • Pingo-Pingo: Another highland herb commonly used in tea infusions.
  • Llama Meat: Very common in stews and roasts; it is a lean and tasty meat.
  • Carob Fruit (Algarrobo): Used for traditional flours and sweets.

Tips and Reminders for 2026

  • Climate and Clothing: The thermal amplitude is brutal. You can have 25°C at noon and -10°C at dawn at the Geysers. Always dress in layers (onion style).
  • Hydration: The air is extremely dry. Drink plenty of water, even if you are not thirsty, to avoid headaches.
  • Cash and Payments: Although cards are accepted in most places, carry cash (Chilean pesos) for entrance fees to indigenous communities, which often only accept physical payment.
  • Book in Advance: San Pedro is a highly demanded destination. During high season (January-February), the best tours and hotels sell out fast.
  • Environmental Respect: You are in a fragile ecosystem. Always follow marked trails and do not take stones or salt from the sites.
