Morro da Urca (220 meters / 722 feet above sea level) is the first of the two hills that make up the famous Sugarloaf Mountain (Pão de Açúcar) complex. Unlike the main Sugarloaf peak —accessible only by cable car or technical rock climbing— Morro da Urca features a well-marked trail that allows visitors to hike up for free through Moises Stern Municipal Natural Park.

It is one of Rio de Janeiro’s best ecotourism experiences, ideal for those looking to combine nature, moderate exercise, and iconic views over Botafogo, Copacabana, and Guanabara Bay.

Ways to Reach the Top: Hiking vs. Cable Car

There are two options for reaching the summit of Morro da Urca:

1. Hike Up the Trail (Free)

The trail starts at the end of Pista Cláudio Coutinho, located to the left of beautiful Praia Vermelha. The hike is short (approx. 1.5 km), shaded by the Atlantic Forest, and takes between 30 and 45 minutes. Although steep in some sections with stone steps and roots, it is suitable for anyone with basic fitness.

2. Take the Cable Car (Bondinho)

If you prefer not to hike, you can buy a full Bondinho cable car ticket at the Praia Vermelha station. The first leg brings you directly to the top of Morro da Urca in just 3 minutes.

How to Continue to Sugarloaf Mountain Peak

Once at the top of Morro da Urca, you have the option to connect to the higher peak: Sugarloaf Mountain (Pão de Açúcar - 396 meters).

No walking trail connects Morro da Urca to Sugarloaf: The only way to cross that gap is by cable car or professional rock climbing.
Buying tickets at the summit: On Morro da Urca, there is a ticket booth/digital kiosk where you can purchase a cable car segment to head up to Sugarloaf and complete the descent back to Praia Vermelha.
Cost savings: If you hike the first leg up, buying a partial connecting ticket to Sugarloaf and back down is often cheaper than purchasing the full round-trip ticket from the base.

When you reach the top, you will find a modern complex offering great amenities and entertainment:

360° Viewpoints: Spectacular panoramas of Botafogo Bay, Christ the Redeemer, Praia Vermelha, and the Rio-Niterói Bridge.

Operating Hours

Hiking Trail (Pista Cláudio Coutinho): Open daily from 6:00 AM to 6:00 PM (the entrance gate closes in the late afternoon).
Cable Car (Bondinho): Operates daily from 8:30 AM to 8:00 PM (last boarding uphill is usually around 6:30 PM).
Recommended Time: Start hiking around 3:30 PM - 4:00 PM to beat the midday heat and enjoy the famous sunset from the summit.

Trail Access: 100% FREE.
Standard Cable Car Ticket (All 4 legs): Full round-trip tickets range from approximately 150 to 180 BRL (discounts available for children, students, and advance online bookings).
Partial Connecting Ticket (Bought Uphill): If you hike up and want to visit Sugarloaf by cable car, the connecting segment costs around 80 to 100 BRL.

How to Get to Praia Vermelha (Base)

The Urca neighborhood is one of the safest and quietest areas in Rio de Janeiro.

By Uber / Taxi / Car: The most direct route. Set destination to "Praia Vermelha - Urca". Takes about 10-15 minutes from Copacabana or Botafogo.
By Metro + Bus:
1. Take the Metro to Botafogo Station.
2. Exit through the integrated bus exit and take bus line 518 or 519 (Botafogo x Urca), which drops you right in front of Praia Vermelha and the Pista Cláudio Coutinho entrance.

What is the difficulty level of the hiking trail?

It is rated EASY TO MODERATE. It covers only 1.5 km with a steady 220-meter elevation gain. No technical climbing experience is needed, though some steep stone steps require moderate cardiovascular effort.

Are there facilities and restrooms along the way?

At Pista Cláudio Coutinho (base) and at Morro da Urca summit, you will find free public restrooms, water fountains, shops, and restaurants. There are no food or drink stalls along the forest path itself.

Can I hike back down?

Yes, within operating hours. You can hike down for free along the same trail as long as you do so before Pista Cláudio Coutinho closes (6:00 PM). If it gets dark, you will need to buy a cable car ticket to descend to the base.

What clothing and equipment should I bring?

Sneakers or hiking shoes with good grip (avoid flip-flops for the climb).
Water for the hike.
Sunscreen and insect repellent.
Camera or phone with plenty of battery for summit photos.
