The Forte Duque de Caxias, locally known as Forte do Leme, is a historic military fortification built between 1776 and 1779 atop Morro do Leme at the northern tip of famous Copacabana Beach.

Surrounded by an Environmental Protection Area of preserved Atlantic Forest, the fort combines history, nature, and one of the most stunning 360-degree panoramic views in Rio de Janeiro, offering direct views of Sugarloaf Mountain, Botafogo Bay, Copacabana's coastline, and Christ the Redeemer.

Things to See and Do at Forte do Leme

A visit to the fort mixes an enjoyable outdoor nature walk with military heritage:

1. Hike Up the Ecological Trail (Caminho dos Micos)

To reach the summit, visitors walk along an uphill cobblestone path of about 800 meters surrounded by dense Atlantic rainforest. During the 20 to 30-minute hike, it is very common to spot small marmoset monkeys (micos) and various tropical bird species.

2. Historic Krupp Cannons and Scenic Viewpoints

At the hilltop, four massive German Krupp cannons installed in the early 20th century remain on display. The main viewpoint provides an uncrowded vantage point to photograph Sugarloaf Mountain and the Atlantic Ocean.

3. Historical Exhibition

The fort houses permanent exhibition rooms with historical displays and audiovisual presentations detailing Rio de Janeiro's coastal defense history and local ecosystem preservation.

Forte do Leme Opening Hours

Open Days: Tuesday to Sunday.
Operating Hours: 11:00 AM to 5:00 PM.

How to Get to Forte do Leme

The main entrance to the fort is located at the far end of Leme Beach at Praça Almirante Júlio de Noronha:

Walking from Copacabana:
- Walk along the boardwalk towards the far left end (facing the ocean, heading towards Leme) until reaching the end of the beach.

By Metro:
- The nearest station is Cardeal Arcoverde (Line 1). From there, walk about 15 minutes along Avenida Princesa Isabel to Leme's waterfront or take a short taxi/Uber.

By Bus / Uber:
- Multiple bus routes connect Downtown and the South Zone to Leme. Set your destination in Uber or Taxi to Praça Almirante Júlio de Noronha - Leme.
