Arraial do Cabo: crystal-clear water beaches and unique landscapes in Brazil

Arraial do Cabo is one of the most special beach destinations in the state of Rio de Janeiro. Known for its cold currents, it offers some of the clearest waters in Brazil, making it an ideal place for those seeking the sea, snorkeling, and well-defined coastal landscapes.

  • Praia do Farol - Considered one of the most beautiful beaches in Brazil. Access is controlled and only possible by boat, which helps preserve its natural environment. White sand, transparent water, and a nearly untouched landscape.

  • Prainhas do Pontal do Atalaia - Two small beaches connected by a staircase with ocean views. Easily accessible and one of the most photographed spots in Arraial.

  • Praia Grande - A long, open beach facing the Atlantic Ocean. Ideal for long walks, sunset views, or enjoying stronger waves. It has a very different vibe from the others.

  • Boat tour - One of the best ways to explore Arraial. These tours usually include beaches, caves, and stops for swimming or snorkeling.

  • Snorkeling and diving - Thanks to the water visibility, Arraial is one of the best places in the region to observe marine life, even for beginners.

  • Whale watching - (June to August) The Pontal do Atalaia viewpoints have dedicated binoculars to watch humpback whales passing by.

Arraial do Cabo is located just a few hours from Rio de Janeiro and is one of the most popular getaways from the city, both for day tours and weekend trips.

From Rio, you can find tours that usually include round-trip transport, a boat trip, stops at several beaches, and lunch.

As with other nearby destinations, it’s best to book these excursions directly in Rio. In tourist areas like Copacabana there is plenty of offer, competitive prices, and flexibility depending on the weather.

  • Currency: Brazilian real (BRL).

  • Climate: tropical, with colder waters than other beaches in the region.

  • Transport: easy to get around on foot and by boat; tours cover the main spots.

  • Prices: moderate; tours from Rio are usually convenient.

  • Best time: weekdays or off-season to avoid crowds. May is considered the ideal month to visit: better prices, fewer people, and still great weather.

  • The wind is the boss: Before planning your day, check the wind forecast. If the wind is strong, the Navy may cancel boat departures.

  • Ecological fee: To enter the port (Praia dos Anjos) and board boats, you must pay a small municipal fee in cash or QR. Don’t forget this before lining up.

  • Waking up early is mandatory: Arraial is a mass tourism destination during the day. To see the empty staircase at Pontal or enjoy Praia do Forno without crowds, you need to be there by 8:00 AM.

  • Watch out for “Borrachudos”: In vegetated areas near the sand there are biting insects. Regular repellent is sometimes not enough; locals recommend citronella oil.

  • Bring warm clothes (even in summer): The water in Arraial is so cold that when you get out, wind can make you shiver. A rash guard or towel is always useful.

  • Traveler tip: water clarity depends heavily on wind; calm days offer the best visibility. If you are flexible, don’t book tours without checking the forecast, since cloudy windy days make the water look darker.

Arraial do Cabo felt like an ideal destination for those who prioritize the sea above all else. Each beach has its own character, and the boat tour quickly helps you understand the geography of the area.

As a getaway from Rio it works very well, but staying one or two nights makes a big difference. Especially early in the morning or at the end of the day, when tourist traffic drops, the place becomes much more enjoyable.
